19 March 1942

Around 10am Moresby is hit with raid No 14 as 8 Japanese bombers drop 18 bombs near the stern of the Minaka near Paga Point without hitting it and another 20 near the wharf, with some near the wireless station. No real damage and no casualties.

Patrols from 5r3rd Battalion head off into the nearby mountains after reports that anti-aircraft fire has brought down one of the enemy bombers.

Around 9.30am a Japanese 2-engined reconnaissance monoplane is sighted by 39th Battalion Brigade Headquarters flying over Bootless Bay and then circles Port Moresby.

Anti-aircraft gunfire keeps the enemy plane flying at great height above the city.

US General Douglas MacArthur leaves Mindanao in the Philippines, with his staff and family, bound for Australia. They arrive in Darwin this evening, where he takes command of the Allied South-West Pacific forces.

Exiled anti-Dutch leader Sukarno meets with Japanese invaders on Sumatra and agrees to co-operate in their occupation of the Dutch East Indies.

In the fourth raid on Darwin, 14 Japanese aircraft attack causing substantial damage to the remaining buildings  and killing 2 servicemen and wounding another eleven.

The Japanese have now raided Darwin, Broome, Thursday Island, Horn Island and Wyndham on Australian soil.

Three USAAF B-17 bombers arrive at Del Monte airfield on Mindanao Island in the Philippines to evacuate General Douglas MacArthur, his staff and family.

They head for Australia where MacArthur will take up his position as Supreme Commander of all Alllied Forces in the South-West Pacific. The appointment is officially announced in Australia today.
